A 30-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday after allegedly attempting to smuggle cannabis and cigarettes into police holding cells at the Oshakati police station.
The suspect was apprehended during visiting hours after officers discovered the prohibited items concealed inside food that had been brought for detainees.
The cannabis and “Yes” brand cigarettes were allegedly hidden in an attempt to bypass security checks. However, alert officers conducting routine inspections uncovered the illegal goods before they could reach the holding cells.
The man was immediately taken into custody and is expected to face charges related to the possession of cannabis and attempting to smuggle contraband into a correctional facility.
Police have reiterated that all items brought to holding cells are thoroughly searched and warned that anyone caught attempting to smuggle prohibited substances will face legal consequences.
